By default, the native linux version of this game is poorly optimized. You'll find that you have better performance with both the Beta branch version and the Windows version. I opted for the Beta branch version as the Windows version ran through proton has terrible input lag especially at 30fps.

V-Sync was left off as the Steam Deck already enables it at a driver level and the in-game v-sync causes frametime issues. Most settings were disabled to improve performance (especially Sunshadow Quality), those left enabled had little to no performance impact or in the case of anti-aliasing helped to drastically improve image quality.

I chose to target 30fps as achieving 60fps in this game on Steam Deck seems outright impossible. No matter what combination of settings/performance profiles/resolution/launch commands you try, this game cannot sustain a stable 60fps all the way through. What you'll find is that the earlier chapters have no trouble running at 60fps (aside from a handful of stutters related to asset loading), but as the game goes on performance will continue to degrade. By the time you reach Surface Tension, framerate will hover at around 40fps and by the time you reach Xen, framerate will hover in the mid-to-high 30's. All I could do was enable motion blur to help improve the overall fluidity of the game.

On the bright side, the game doesn't seem very power hungry. Power draw will vary but you can expect anywhere from 3 to 4 hours of battery life.

Testing was done on SteamOS 3.5.
