Note
This game struggles to keep to 60fps, so I'm aiming for 45fps.

The game behaves very strangely with FPS limits. Both the built-in FPS limiter and MangoHud (both through QAM and launch option) make the game drop to 30fps and below in certain areas. I've noticed this mainly when first loading in from fast travel, and around the Moon Snail Shells in general.

First, go to the game's Steam properties:
  • I'm using Proton experimental, but I think performance is fine on normal Proton.
  • Set Game Resolution to 1024x640, and enable the toggle below (internal/external display)
    • The game can't hold 45fps all the time at 800p, and on the default configuration the only other graphics option is 854x534, which is a little too low and is evidently blurry with FSR. 640p is a nice middle-ground that gets the performance benefits of upscaling, and still looks great to me.
  • For launch options, there are two options:

In the in-game settings:
  • 1024x640
  • Fullscreen
  • Enable all the toggles
    • Motion blur is personal preference
  • Graphics quality on Medium
  • Texture quality on High
  • Disable V-sync
  • Disable FPS limit
In QAM performance tab:
  • 90hz refresh
  • Disable frame limit
  • Allow tearing
  • FSR Scaling
    • I use FSR sharpness 2
You'll still get stutters here and there, but in my experience this is the most stable configuration for the game. I've just gotten up to Reef's Edge, but I've calibrated these settings around the Slacktide and Duchess' Chambers Moon Snail Shells, which I've found to be the most demanding areas so far.

EDIT: Completed the game with this configuration. Some very minor dips in later areas, but on the whole I generally forgot about the settings and it played amazingly throughout.
